be treated but new drugs were created along with other psychotherapeutic interventions. Then, it was thought that it could be treated but it could not be relieved for long periods
of time. That is also a myth. If it is caught early and if the patients is treated with psychopharmaceutical drugs along with certain therapeutic interventions, his horrible disease can
almost be cured. One of the reasons schizophrenia has such a weak prognosis is that the patient fails to adhere to treatment, such as taking their medication. The patient
has cognitive deficits and has a lack of insight. They generally have little knowledge about their own illness. This has been changing since the 1970s when psychoeducation was introduced as
an intervention for the patient and their families. This provides knowledge about the illness along with therapeutic techniques (Chadzynska & Charzyn?ska, 2011). It is most effective when both patients and
family are involved in the process (Dixon & Hackman, 2008). Cochrane conducted an analysis on psychoeducation and schizophrenia in 2006 and found that these kinds of interventions can have a
dramatic impact on relapse rates and well as on re-hospitalization rates (Vreeland, 2012). It also increased the patients adherence to medication and improved the patients overall quality of life (Vreeland,
2012). Relapses and repeat hospitalizations are common with people who have chronic mental illness. It is important for schizophrenic patients to receive the kinds of evidence-based treatment programs that will
reduce relapses. Psychoeducation is an intervention the literature supports as meeting these criteria (Dixon & Hackman, 2008; Duman et al., 2010). These authors state that psychoeducation is the key component
in any psychosocial program for these patients. In Duman et al.s (2010) study, 71 percent of participants had greater knowledge of their illness as well as of their medications following
