diluted form of psychoanalysis (Grohol, 2004). It is based on a deficit-orientation as well as a medical model in that the psychotherapist or psychoanalyst views the patient as having an
illness (Grohol, 2004). The therapist asks the question - what is lacking in this patient (Grohol, 2004). The dynamic part of the title refers to the belief that we are
all "made up from a dynamic that begins in early childhood and progresses throughout life" (Grohol, 2004). Psychodynamic therapists generally view their patients as "the composite of their parental upbringing
and how particular conflicts between themselves and their parents and within themselves get worked out" (Grohol, 2004). In this analysis, therapists rely on the concepts of Freuds ego, superego, and
Id classifications believing that these particular constructs do dictate an individuals personality (Grohol, 2004). Like Freud, they also place a great deal of emphasis on the unconscious insofar as what
people dont know about themselves really can hurt them (Grohol, 2004). The approach considers the different developmental theories of personality development, such as Freuds psychosexual stages of development (Grohol, 2004).
In this theory, all humans must successfully negotiate the conflicts at each stage in order to become a fully-functional person. If the adult individual was unable to satisfy the needs
of each stage, they will have unresolved conflicts as adults, in fact, they will suffer mental illness to some degree or other (Grohol, 2004). Psychodynamic therapists subscribe to the notion
