Paper Store, , September 2010 properly! Psychodynamic theories of personality are based on the premise
that there are internal conflicts that must be resolved for the personality to develop. Major theorists in this area are Freud, Erikson, Adler, Jung and Horney although they each emphasize
different aspects of personality development. All personality theories have been influenced by Freuds work. He said the personality has three parts: the id is the basest and concerned with
fulfilling instincts, the ego is the mediator between the id and the superego. It is like a conscience. The superego is always striving for the high ground. It is in
the superego that values learned as a youngster are internalized (JRank Psychology Encyclopedia, 2009). For Freud, there was always a conflict between the id and the superego. Freud did not
believe people are naturally good. Freud suggested there are three layers in the mind. The preconscious is the available memory, the things a person can bring to the conscious mind;
the conscious is what we are aware of at any given moment; and the unconscious is everything that is not easily accessible to the conscious mind (JRank Psychology Encyclopedia, 2009;
Boeree, Erikson, 2006). Another important contribution from Freud was his five stages of psychosexual development. The are oral (1-12 months); anal (13-24 months); phallic (25 months to 6 years); latency
