the field are psychiatrists and psychologists. Although the terms might be used in an interchangeable fashion by some, the reality is that the professions are quite different, and utilize the
study of abnormal psychology to radically different ends. II. Credentials of Each Profession A. Psychiatrists 1. Psychiatrists are medical doctors Psychiatrists are distinct from other
practitioners in the field of abnormal psychology because they have medical training. In addition to their training in psychology, psychiatrists generally obtain a medical degree, and then complete a residency
in a hospital focusing on mental health, just as a surgeon would. This experience allows them a more direct interface with the clinical and practical impacts of abnormal psychology. It
also means that they have the capacity to prescribe psychiatric drugs as a way of managing cases of abnormal psychology. B. Psychologists Unlike psychiatrists who complete a
medical degree, psychologists take on a more academic approach to the field of abnormal psychology, going on from their undergraduate study to take part in rigorous advanced graduate study, usually
on some sort of specialized topic within the field of abnormal psychology. As a result of this training, psychologists are usually able to specialize in one of two career paths:
