In the Hebrew Bible, the Book of Psalms is comprised of five separate books, which encompass a total of 150 Psalms, composed in several different literary genres (Just 2011). Book III of Psalms contains Psalms 73-89 (Henry 2007). The vast majority of these Psalms are attribute authorship to Asaph, with Psalms 84, 85, and 87 attributed to Korahites; Psalm 86 attributed to David and 89 attributed to Ethan (Just 2011). Modern scholars classify the Psalms according to several literary categories. The most common of these designations that is pertinent to Book III is the Community Lament (Just 2011). The following examination of Book Number III (Psalms 73-89), seeks to establish whether or not there is theological unity in this section, as well as how this collection contributes to the overall Book of Psalms. Psalm 73 John Calvin points out that this psalm begins by praising the righteousness and goodness of God, but then the author confesses that when he perceived that the wicked were enjoying wealth, while the righteous were plagued by calamities without God remedying this situation, it was a severe shock that caused him to disregard religion and fear of God (Calvin 2007, p. 107). However, the psalmist goes on to indicate that this reaction was foolish as this simply took into account the current state of affairs, while exercising patience and placing trust in the "providence of God" changes ones perspective as the faithful know that the righteous will receive their just reward, while the wicked cannot escape the "hand of the judge" (Calvin 2007, p. 107).
