Nevertheless, modern readers are also aware of differences between the historical circumstances of the psalmist and contemporary society, as the psalms refer to historical events as evidence of the interaction of God with human society. As the following exegesis will demonstrate, both of these features, the commonality of spiritual experience and the background of historical event are evident in Psalm 3. Historical context The psalms are known for being notoriously difficult to date precisely, and the vast majority can simply be placed within a broad era, such as that of a monarchy or the postexilic period (May 8). Psalm 3 is historically attributed to David and the introductory line indicates that it was composed during the period when David fled from his son Absalom; however, James Mays analysis identifies the psalmist as an anonymous believer who is facing hostility and the prayer is, therefore, an affirmation of his trust in God (Mays 51). As this indicates, some scholars believe that the royal language of this psalm was adopted by a private individual (Eaton 488). On the other hand, others, such as John Calvin and other famous commentators, maintain that a literal interpretation is more accurate and that the image it conjures of a king about to go into battle is accurate. In line with this position, Craigie indicates that he believes that the prayer was originally Davids, as he was fleeing from Absalom, but that it was later adopted by other monarchs, who used it within the context of military crisis, and that it was also utilized more generally among the citizenry as part of their morning worship (Eaton 488).
