A 5 page research paper that discusses the canonical Wisdom Books of the Old Testament, which are Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes. Each book is strikingly different, and thought provoking, offering ideas that address not only the nature of the Almighty, but also the purpose, or seeming lack of purpose, for humanity. These different visions address the topics of natural violence, social injustice and human suffering in different ways that cause the reader to ponder why the tone of scripture should be so radically different in these books than from the Torah and the other books included in the Old Testament. included in the Old Testament. While the "bulk of the Old Testament calls us simply to obey and to believe," the wisdom books summon "us to think hard as
well as humbly," as these books include the "cooler comments of the teacher and the often anguished questions of the learner" (Kidner 11). In short, the purpose of the Wisdom
text is to teach rather than relate a story. Poetical in form, they portray "real human experience and grapple with profound problems" (Keathley). Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes concern themselves with
the experiences of godly people in "varying vicissitudes of this changeful life" (Keathley). Just as the historical books of the Old Testament recount the Israels "national development and life" and
the books pertaining to the law relate Israels "moral life, the Wisdom Books relate "Israels spiritual life" (Keathley). This section of the Bible begins with Proverbs, which contains 31
chapters, which are made up wise sayings, consisting of two lines of poetry. The majority of the book is attributed to King Solomon (Keathley). As the title of the book
suggests, the "theme and purpose" of this text is "wisdom for living through special instruction on every conceivable issue of life" (Keathley). There are numerous themes throughout Proverbs. In general,
