turbulence within the society and the world. In the United States during the 1960s the nation saw protests involving civil rights, the beginning of the gay movement, and the true
beginning of protests against Vietnam, to name the prominent protests and social causes. The following paper examines the protesting that went on in the first half of the 1960s and
then the second half of the 1960s. The paper then contrasts the two. First Half of the 60s In 1960 there was the event in North Carolina wherein
4 black college students sat down at a Woolworths lunch counter and then refused to leave (Ronald Reagan Web [1], 2005). They are refused service but their actions led many
others to see the attention one could get through non-violent activities that made a point and got into the media (Ronald Reagan Web [1], 2005). In that same year
we see the development of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee which was established in South Carolina (Ronald Reagan Web [1], 2005). It was an organization which provided "young blacks with
a place in the civil rights movement" (Ronald Reagan Web [1], 2005). In 1961 we see the development and action of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) which starts sending
off students who are volunteers onto bus trips. These bus trips were intended to "test the implementation of new laws prohibiting segregation in interstate travel facilities. One of the first
two groups of freedom riders, encounters its first problem two weeks later, when a mob in Alabama sets the riders bus on fire" (Ronald Reagan Web [1], 2005). Their determined
focus however eventually made a difference and ensured integration in interstate and travel facilities throughout the South (Ronald Reagan Web [1], 2005). In 1963 we see the beginning of
