643 Natural systems exist in a precarious balance. So too do the species of plants and animals that live
in those systems. When that balance is disrupted, one result can be extinction. Extinction occurs when organisms fail to adapt to changes in their environment. Unfortunately, there
are far too many examples of organisms that have gone extinct over time. So to are there far too many examples of organisms that are currently threatened or actually
on the verge of extinction themselves. Trefil and Hazen contend that the fossil record demonstrates that the number of animals and plants that
have lived on our planet that are now extinct exceeds the number that currently are extant. Indeed, it has been contended that for every species of organism that
is alive today an estimated one-thousand species of organisms have died out (Trefil and Hazen). An estimated two-thirds of all the species alive during the Cretaceious period, in fact,
were extinct by the end of that period (Trefil and Hazen). Obviously, the majority of animals that have gone
extinct throughout time did so without any influence of human beings. Unfortunately, however, over time humans began to have a greater and greater impact on their environment. By
