should be allowed to sit behind a desk for at least a few months. After all, the health of her baby is at stake and many businesses make accommodations for
their pregnant employees. In many cases, such accommodations are the law. Pregnancy is covered under some federal discrimination statutes and so should be viewed by many police departments with care.
However, some departments around the nation have resisted the accommodation. Some believe it is a discriminatory practice. Male officers who injure themselves are sometimes afforded a desk position, but desk
jobs are sometimes coveted in a profession where walking the beat is equated with paying dues. Why should women get better treatment? While of course such Neanderthal attitudes prevail in
some districts, it seems that in the state of Virginia for example, there are some police stations such a the Norfolk Airport Police Department that does not presently have a
specific policy to accommodate pregnant officers. Of course, the Virginia police are not the only law enforcement agency to have faced charges of discrimination. Quite recently, three female police
officers filed a federal lawsuit against the Suffolk County Police Department, in New York, that alleges they were forced to go on leave during pregnancy instead of allowing them to
pursue light duty opportunities (Endo A06). Sarah MacDermott claimed she was not allowed to work the desk and she had been an officer for more than ten years (A06).
