culture is reflected in practically every aspect of Canadian society. Because Canada is a relatively small country, and particularly because of the pervasive influence of the US, Canadian culture
is also endangered to a certain degree. The arts in particular seem threatened. Canadian art, of course, is a multicultural phenomenon and one that is affected quite significantly
by both internal and external factors. The Department of Canadian Heritages Cultural Affairs Sector is very cognizant of the threat of Canadian art being diluted by outside influences.
The Departments goal is to prevent this dilution and to preserve Canadian art for future generations. Achieving that goal, however, is easier said than done. The Departments mission
is focused on three broad issues in particular. These are 1. Insuring that all cultural components of Canada have a visible presence in the arts, 2. Stabilizing threatened community
arts initiatives, and 3. Insuring copyright protection for Canadian art. Community art initiatives in themselves take a variety of formats.
One of the most threatened of those formats is the performing arts. It might be contended, however, that the performing arts are the strongest reflection of the diversity of
multicultural issues and ideologies that underpin Canadian life. As a consequence, the image that we see there is relevant not only to the culture that produced it but to
all Canadians. As might be expected, the Department of Canadian Heritages Cultural Affairs Sector is very active in formulating cultural policies and programs that encourage each facet of Canadian
culture to have a voice in the arts. This is important not just because of what these cultures artistic productions can offer Canada but because of what they can
