The authors will develop them, think of their past, their habits, and other characteristics that bring the character to life. With that in mind the following paper presents an examination of what a possible monologue would be in relationship to five different characters, the protagonists, from five different short stories. The stories are F. Scott Fitzgeralds "Babylon Revisited," William Faulkners "Barn Burning," John Cheevers "The Swimmer," Flannery OConnors "Good Country People," and Alice Walkers "Everyday Use." Cheever: The Swimmer The protagonist in this story is the swimmer. He is a man with his own ideals yet also a man lost in a world of modernity which seems to have lost some of its meaning to some extent. Perhaps he is a victim of the modern world, and yet perhaps he is a man who represents that modern world. This monologue, like the ones that will follow, only take one possible approach to one aspect of their personality, or one thought process as seen from the stories they exist within. "As a man there are certain things a person must do, certain things a man must feel and never turn away from. So many men were lost in their worlds of their wives and their jobs and their families, never examining what it was to be a man.
