to answer in the novel, Wide Sargasso Sea, which was first published in 1966. It is described as a postcolonial novel, but it is also a deeply personal consideration
of an individual at odds with society, and the inevitable consequences. Born Antoinette Cosway, the protagonist is a white Creole who was the proverbial puzzle piece that never seemed
to fit from the moment she was born. To the European colonials, she was tainted by African blood, and to the Africans, she was a half-breed because of her
French heritage. Society serves as a mirror that reflects the prevailing attitudes of its members. Whenever Antoinette looked into the mirror, she could see the judgmental faces of
others staring back at her, but never caught a glimpse of herself. Growing up on a dilapidated plantation, Coulibri Estate, representing the last vestiges of the colonial era, Antoinette, who
received little attention from outsiders, sought solace from within at a very early age. In Spanish Town, Antoinette and her family were outcasts from the beginning largely due to
her mother Annettes social displacement as a native of Martinique. The memories of her father, Alexander, are few, and perhaps his strong presence in her life might have made
a difference in the patriarchal region. But mother and daughter are left fending for themselves and struggling to care for Antoinettes enfeebled brother Pierre, as Annettes behavior becomes increasingly
