for that matter, but if money is exchanged, it is construed as an awful crime. Why should that be? Sex is construed as immoral often if it is not in the context of a marriage. Monogamy is applauded by society and supported by religion. At the same time, there are many people who are not married or engaged in serial monogamy and have sex with multiple partners. They are ordinary people and not prostitutes, but money is not exchanged. Even if a woman is considered to be sexually promiscuous, she would not be arrested for it. Yet, women who take money for sex are construed as criminals. Some do not think that this is fair and point to the notion that all women are prostitutes in this patriarchal society. They allow men to buy them dinner and feel as if they have to reward them with sex. Some women go as far as marrying wealthy men. They may not love them but just want their money. The wealthy men who are perhaps old or homely get sex in return. Is that not prostitution? Even if one were to distinguish sex for money from relationships that are monetarily oriented, prostitution may be construed as a morally acceptable act from a Utilitarian point of view. Many philosophical and sociological questions loom over this issue. In looking through philosophical ideas, one that stands out that would seemingly support prostitution is utilitarianism. It is a philosophy that is aligned with a general presumption that the good of the majority should be served. However, whether it would support the practice is not clear.
