seem to be. This paper briefly discusses some of the pros and cons of the juvenile justice system. Discussion The juvenile justice system exists because juveniles are not capable of
the same reasoning processes as adults. They literally lack the cognitive ability to connect actions with their consequences. Knowing this, society decided it was appropriate to devise a system that
put the emphasis on rehabilitation and training, rather than punishment. The result is the juvenile justice system. Among the positives of the system is the fact that it exists at
all, and that it tries to rehabilitate juveniles, who presumably have their entire lives ahead of them and have the time to relearn their antisocial behavior and go on with
productive lives (Siegel & Welsh, 2008). The system recognizes the fact that children and teens are not adults, and acts accordingly. This is perhaps its greatest strength. Another positive is
the fact that training programs are available to many of those sentenced to corrections under this system; they are not simply left to sit and watch TV or do some
sort of menial work that has no relevance to what their lives will be in the future (Siegel & Welsh, 2008). One of the problems with the system is
that it is not standardized; each state has its own version. Funding mechanisms are different in each jurisdiction; rulings are different; the community response is different (Siegel & Welsh, 2008).
This makes the whole system cumbersome and difficult to deal with. There is also an ongoing debate about when (and whether) its ever appropriate to transfer a juvenile offender to
adult court. As noted above, there are sound psychological and physiological reasons why juveniles cannot be considered as adults. However, it is also an indisputable fact that children can and
