Discussion American children regularly test lower on academic subjects than their counterparts in other countries, a matter of grave concern to American educators and politicians alike, who argue that this means America will not be competitive in the future. In order to measure students achievement and improve their performance, standards were instituted that would measure performance across the nation to the same standard. Matthew Gandal and Laura McGiffert argue that these standardized tests are both necessary and effective. They use the analogy of the medical profession, which uses batteries of tests to determine the illness the patient is suffering from and the course of treatment. They argue that although there are a great many tests and they can be very expensive, no one argues that they are necessary. They believe that in order to find out whats wrong with the educational system, a similar battery of tests is necessary. Three points in favor of testing are that teachers need to give tests in order to determine what students are learning. Tests have been the standard of measurement in classrooms for decades, if not centuries; they do allow a teacher to see how much material the students retain. A second point in favor of the testing is that students have to learn how to take tests. They will be facing tests throughout their entire academic career. A third point in favor of testing is that standardized tests require teachers to teach the basics. There are a number of people who feel that some educators have gone too far from core courses.
