that marijuana is nothing short of a gateway drug and would lead many to try harder drugs. On the other hand there are many people who argue that it is
less harmful than alcohol and legalizing it would benefit the economy a great deal. With that in mind the following paper examines these pros and cons to legalization as it
pertains to the state of California. Pros and Cons of Legalizing Marijuana in California One of the most important things that is happening in California today is the
economic crisis. California is suffering greatly from the economic strain on the nation and parks have been closed, and people have essentially lost their jobs due to the fact that
there is really no money in the state. In one article it is noted that California just confronted a deficit of $42 billion and is still facing more financial troubles
(Gorman). Gorman also notes that if marijuana was legalized it could pull in as much as "$1.3 billion in revenue for the state." One of the pros of legalizing
marijuana is to implement taxes that could be used for the struggling state. People argue that many people already smoke and use the illegal substance and some people argue they
would not mind paying for it if it were legalized, and adding to their cost through taxes (Gorman). It is argued that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol and yet
