medical support. This practice is illegal in most countries with the exception of the Netherlands, which permits voluntary euthanasia on a limited basis (Ersek, 2005). When the term of euthanasia is used, it is usually a broad description for three specific types. First, there is assisted suicide (AS), which is when a physician provides the patient with the means of killing himself or herself in accordance with the suffering patients wishes. In the United States, this practice is currently only legal in Oregon (Ersek, 2005). It is important to note, however, that only an MD or DO can prescribe the medication for an assisted suicide; it is illegal for an advanced practice nurse to do so (Ersek, 2005). Next, there is what is known as active euthanasia, in which a medical professional (typically a doctor or a nurse) actively participates in the ending of a patients life (Ersek, 2005). Finally, there is withdrawing or withholding life-sustaining therapy (WWLST), which has previously been referred to as "letting die" or passive euthanasia, which involves the discontinuance of any kind of therapy being used to prolong life, including "cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), mechanical ventilation, artificially provided nutrition and hydration, and antibiotics" (Ersek, 2005, p. 48). Upon first glance, it would appear that euthanasia is an application that is in direct contradiction to everything the healthcare establishment represents. After all, the Hippocratic oath is dedicated to the preservation of life and opposes anything that hastens the natural life cycle process. The pro/con arguments concerning euthanasia can be broken down into four distinctive categories. First, there is the bioethical principle, which involves a patients autonomy or respecting the individuals right to choose whether or not to terminate life through assisted suicide (Ersek, 2005).
