viewpoints inevitably collide. One of the most hotly-debated topics has long been the interpretation of the U.S. Constitutions First Amendment, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of
religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech" (Woll 581). Should speech be unrestricted on college campuses, or does it lead to violence which
threatens the lives and reputations of students? College represents a place of higher learning, where students receive not only textbook educations, but educations on life. It is where
value structures take shape, and a persons character is defined. Although free speech has long been advocated on college campuses, the 1990s has issued in the practice of censorship
in the name of political correctness (Garry 29). It is free speech which have broken down the traditional gender and civil rights barriers which have long separated men and
women, blacks and whites in America (Garry 29). Free speech in itself has never been the problem; it is the problems it exposes which are regarded as threatening.
If putting up walls, or in this instance, enacting censorship, it is much easier to pretend that gender and racial issues do not exist. If citizens hear no evil
or speak no evil, does that automatically imply that evil does not exist in a country which has long promoted itself as a democracy? By not restricting speech on college
campuses, issues are not being resolved. Like wounds which arent allowed to heal, they continue to fester until infection sets in. Free speech has led to something which
is unacceptable -- hate speech -- targeting certain groups on the basis of gender, race or sexual preference. Speech codes have been imposed by such respected academic institutions as
