a proposal for a medical treatment center focusing on drug addiction. The facility will operate in Iowa, in conjunction with an established local hospital. The facility will rely
on the hospitals staff, accreditation and regulatory licenses but beyond that will be responsible for its own budget and clients insurance matters. Problem Statement
There are many good and effective behavioral treatment centers in Iowa, and they have good results with most of their clients who are truly committed to becoming drug-free.
Some individuals, however, also need medical intervention that behavioral-only centers cannot provide. Referral "to other medical, psychological, and social services are crucial components of treatment for many patients" (Drug
Addiction Treatment & Recovery, n.d.). Access to medical intervention often is the limiting factor in achieving a successful end to the addiction cycle for many clients.
As is the case everywhere else, Iowa is not immune to drug addiction. Iowas central location places it on the transport maps of traffickers, and
both locally produced and introduced methamphetamine has become an increasing threat. Further, the "abuse of pharmaceutical drugs continues to rise at an exponential rate" (Iowa Drug and Alcohol Rehab
Programs and Addiction Treatment Centers, 2007). Breaking addiction to these and other abused drugs often requires medical intervention as well. Figure 1. Components of Comprehensive Drug Abuse Treatment
