searching and struggle. The characters in both stories are experiencing different realities, with Steinbecks novel dealing with the devastation of the Great Dust Bowl and Hemingways novel dealing with people
lost after the reality of WWI. Their struggles and their sense of searching presents us with different situations and different characters who must deal with their material world. And, in
both stories we essentially have people who understand, in one way or another, that material possessions are worthless from a spiritual aspect. The paper examines how the characters form both
books address the idea of property and possessions differently. With Hemingways story we have people who are being somewhat rebellious and are spiritually lost, feeling that material wealth is of
no concern, much like teenagers rebel against such materialism. With Steinbecks story we have realistic characters who know that material wealth is of no importance, save for survival and for
the sake of owning land, a very spiritual and deep reality that signifies a great deal to the Joad family. Material Wealth With Hemingways characters we have young
individuals who are on a sort of holiday from life. They are traveling from one area to another, enjoying life, or trying to find life. They are lost souls due
to the devastating events of WWI and they are constantly searching for something. With their characters we find their attachment to material wealth as a very intriguing condition. For example,
they are constantly doing things like running off to one country or another, and they are constantly eating, drinking, and having adventures. These things cost money, and while the people
seem to imagine that material wealth means nothing to them, they are certainly immersed in a life that uses material wealth and relies on it. As one author states, "The
