While we fear violent crimes the most, property crimes concern us as well. Indeed, property crimes take a tremendous toll on
our society, both a psychological toll and an economical toll. Interestingly, however, the most recent data on property crimes in the US indicate that they have actually decreased in
their frequency. It is important to emphasize, of course, that statistics can at times be misleading. To fully understand trends in property crimes it is necessary to delve
more deeply into how those statistics are collected, compiled, and reported. Furthermore, news accounts of property crimes dont always provide a lot of information as to motive.
A recent newspaper article reports that the FBIs Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) for January through , indicates that crimes against property had actually decreased
2.8 percent across the nation compared to what they were the first six months of the previous year (Richey, 2010). What this article doesnt tell you is that there
