1297 The Spanish Civil War marked a time of
great change. The July 17, 1936 coup against the Spanish Republic was orchestrated by key right wing military officers but was carried out by a variety of anarchist entities
who called, in part for social revolution. Popular militias were put in place by radical trade unions to resist the rebellion. On both sides, common citizens were called
to the cause. One of the more important tools utilized during the civil war was propaganda. Propaganda posters, in particular, proved to be an effective means of swaying
people to one side or another. These posters, although relatively simplistic in their graphics, were complex in their symbolism. Common themes included power, strength, weakness, fear, and compassion.
The particular ideology of the camp that produced the posters, of course, directed the way that these themes were depicted and for whom.
Sapre (2004) writes that the "authors of wartime propaganda plant an idea in the minds of the audience so that the idea becomes a part of the
