Anselm says that if something so perfect as God can be conceived in both the mind and in reality, that something must exist. If the greatest being can be conceived
by us, than, that being must exist. If this is true then, the being that is conceived in the mind must also be conceived as existing in reality because we
cannot conceive something that does not exist. His conclusion is that if we conceive of a being that is more perfect than anything else we can conceive, then that is
God. Anselm is talking about a perfect being and no other greater being can be imagined beyond this perfection. If we understand this in our minds, then, we must
also agree that being does exist beyond our own mental processes, in other words, that being exists in reality. If such a being could be imagined but it did not
exist also in reality, then, a more perfect being would be able to be conceived in our minds. If nothing greater can be imagined, that being must be God.
Many very learned philosophers attempted to discredit Anselms reasoning but were unable to do so successfully (Palmer, 2002). One major philosopher, however, did support Anselms reasoning - Rene Descartes who
broke the argument down in a much easier argument (Palmer, 2002). Descartes began with the premise that God is the only being who is absolutely perfect (Palmer, 2002). And, since
it is "more perfect to exist than not to exist" (Palmer, 2002, p. 162), then, God must exist (Palmer, 2002). The author informs the reader that Anselms argument is an
