Common practice has been that producers provide preventive treatments in the form of antibiotics and growth hormones, but that approach increasingly has come under scrutiny in recent years. On the one hand, discussion of free range meat and egg production conjures up images of well-intentioned but misinformed environmentalists, the same that would have us solving big-city smog problems by returning to horse and buggy transportation, without a thought as to the other problems that would arise as a result. On the other, the notion of sustainable development (SD) is one that is growing rapidly throughout the world. SD is a concept that has been practiced by many over the years, but has not been accepted by "the mainstream" as being an approach to agriculture that can be profitable. The purpose here is to explore methods of educating the public on the benefits of using free range meat and eggs. Free Range Meat and Egg Production The poultry houses of the Southeast United States are long and low structures confining chickens or turkeys to not much more square footage than they need to stand upright and take one or two steps.
