One solution has been to turn to automation and the use of artificial intelligence in the form of robots. On the one hand, automation provides "greater flexibility," but on the
other, automation also creates increased complexity, which can give rise to new hazards (Robot safety, 2005, p. 21). While automation has reduced
the human exposure to machines and the possibilities for injury inherent in this interaction, it has also increased the complexity of human interaction with machinery when intervention is required, such
as "during maintenance operations, during troubleshooting following production incidents and during the cleaning and setting phrases" (Robot safety, 2005, p. 21). In response to this need, "new robot and automation
safety standards have been developed in Canada" and also globally (Robot safety, 2005, p. 21). However, safety standards and protocols cannot protect workers if safeguards are ignored. In 1981,
Kenji Urada, a 37-year-old factory worker in Japan, climbed over a safety fence in order to carry out maintenance on a production robot, but forgot to follow safety procedures and
switch the robot off before doing so (Trust me, 2006). While robots exhibit what is know as A.I., that is "artificial intelligence," this refers to the robots ability to mimic
certain human movements and follow their programming. It does not mean that the robot is actually intelligent, as an average housefly is actually more intelligent than a robot. Having no
