One of the most important themes of Eban and Wetmores "Promised Land" is that of continuity, both in the historical and the cultural sense. Ebans own background
and career involved him intimately in the Jewish struggle to achieve a homeland, and he was a major participant in the social and political struggles which eventually led up to
the founding of the State of Israel. Promised Land is not a chronological documentary of these events, nor is it a narrative: rather, it attempts to give a holistic perspective
on the Jewish community, both internationally and in the context of Israel, through both text and visual images.
It is aimed at a wide audience, including those who are already familiar with Jewish history and culture and those who
are not, and although it is understandably compiled from a pro-Jewish point of view, it seeks to offer the reader a fuller understanding of Jewish history and culture rather than
using the text as a vehicle to attack or undermine other cultures.
If one considers Ebans work from the perspective of cultural analysis, it immediately becomes apparent that Jewish culture, unlike American, is very much an example
of high-context culture. Such a society finds meaning in the context of an interaction, whereas low context cultures tend to rely far more on spoken words and written communication rather
