The goals of these kinds of initiatives are: to keep students in school; to help them achieve academically; to help them achieve socially and to become health adult members of the community. Typically, the programs employ three primary kinds of strategies either separately or in conjunction with each other: 1.) developing innovative and nontraditional approaches to academic study; 2.) creating links to future opportunities; and 3.) blending community services, such as health, social services and recreation into the school environment (Shaul, 2000, p. 4). Our primary purpose is aligned with the first strategy: to offer innovative and nontraditional approaches to improving math and reading. We expect a secondary outcome will be social and psychological, that is building confidence and self-esteem in students who are below grade level in reading and math. Project Team A multifunctional or cross-functional project team has been established. The team will be comprised of personnel from human resources, information technology, marketing, and procurement. Gautschi asserted that of the team models the one that was the most successful was the cross-functional, integrated, self-managed project team which: 1. Maximizes individual contributions to the group (Gautschi, 1998; p. 232). 2. Achieves better commitment (Gautschi, 1998; p. 232). 3.
