At times it seems that an effective project manager needs to be "all things to all people," but as Gray and Larson (2003) illustrate in the cases of Joe
and Jack (p. 330), the one who is consistent and keeps the project as his primary concern throughout its progress is the one who is much more effective. The
nine traits of an effective project manager identified by Gray and Larson (2003) are: 1. Systems thinker 2. Personal integrity 3. Proactive 4. High stress tolerance 5. General business perspective
6. Good communicator 7. Effective time management 8. Skillful politician 9. Optimism 1. Systems thinker. The very nature of project management is
such that it is necessary to break large items into smaller ones, schedule those, ensure they are completed in a timely manner so that all of the individual components come
together at the appropriate time to complete the project. It is critical not only that the project manager has and retains a systems view, but that s/he impart this
perspective to others on the project team as well. One of the first considerations in any decision-making process should be, "How will this affect other parts of the system?"
The alternative is to take a narrow view of the potential benefits of an action and then be surprised when it has adverse effects in another area of operation.
