a company. When projects fail, companies lose money. The project managers job is crucial to the success of any company. While a project managers responsibilities and duties are somewhat dependent
upon the specific industry and the company within that industry, there are some general universal criteria for project managers. The first point to make is that the project manager will
typically report to another manager or maybe to the senior project manager (projects etc, 2007). If the position is for the senior project manager, he or she will most likely
report to a vice-president or other high level executive. The competencies any project manager must possess include the following: * Create and execute project work plans, which will likely be
modified or adapted at some point in the process (Marios Alexandrou, 2007). This means the manager must be adaptable and have foresight. * Identify all of the resources that will
be needed for each specific project and assign specific responsibilities to each member of the project team (Alexandrou, 2007; projects etc, 2007). * Monitor and manage daily operational aspects of
the project (Alexandrou, 2007; projects etc, 2007). * Use various project management tools that will assure success and achievement (Alexandrou, 2007; projects etc, 2007). Some strategists make a distinction between
project management and "managing by project" (Pile, 2004). The latter "plays a strategic role in business" (Pile, 2004). This makes sense when one considers that in some instances, there are
