Cooperative alliances came into their own throughout the decade of the 1990s as the need for information sharing and cooperation became clear and as technology advances continued to enable such information sharing while preserving organizations collectively private information. Project teams are likely to be comprised of individuals working for different employers. Ibbott and OKeefe (2004) relate the experiences of Vodafone and Ericsson as they sought "to transform their relationship into a global and virtual one, enacted through an inter-organisational information system (IIS)" (p. 219). Going against conventional wisdom requiring well-planned steps and tasks executed to arrive at a well-defined final destination, these two organizations regarded the effort as an exercise in improvisation. They had a general idea of where they wanted the final system to take them in their alliance, and the final product, "eRelationship, allows for information sharing, communication, virtual teams, competence development, network support services, and product forecasting, ordering and tracking" (Ibbott and OKeefe, 2004; p. 219). The experiences of Vodafone and Ericsson obviously led to success because of ongoing and overt dedication to the projects success at the highest levels of both companies. Building cohesive and effective teams remains a challenge in the single-location organization, but it is doubly challenging when the work team is to be virtual (Pawar and Sharifi, 1997). Also adding challenge is creating cohesion in a team made of diverse professionals. They have different perspectives, though not very different needs, than workers on the "front line."
