provides a visual depiction of the critical path through the network (Gray and Larson, 2008). The critical path will show the shortest and the longest times for the project to be completed. Each part in the network will reflect if there are predecessors, i.e., other activities that must be completed prior to this one. A forward pass calculates the early start data and the early finish date. These represent the earliest time the project will begin and the earliest time it will be completed (Richman, 2006). To calculate these times, the project manager would begin at the left side of the network diagram and as the manager continues through each step, he considers what is the earliest time that this step can start and the earliest time that step can be completed. There are four steps. The beginning date is given the name day zero so the earliest time it can be begun is day zero. The amount of time that step will take is added to day zero (Richman, 2006). For example, the shortest time that step would take is five days so the earliest finish date is zero plus five days, which is the earliest date the next step will begin (Richman, 2006). This process is continued throughout the project flowchart. The forward pass is an important component in project management in terms of scheduling. This is the first step in constructing the network diagram. It also helps to determine the projects critical path. In fact, the critical path for the project can not be calculated without the forward pass. The other two sets of calculations for the critical path are the backward pass and the float (Edwards, 2011). The forward pass represents the most optimistic projection for the duration and completion of the ...
