On a lighter note, women were getting into the swing of emancipating both their social status and their bodies. Up until 1922, womens swimsuits better resembled nuns habits than anything one might wear to the beach. The advent of one-piece knitted woolen bathing suits set the stage for an ever-progressing style that became slinkier and slinkier as the decades past. The significant change that came about in 1922, which set everyone to take an immediate opinion, what the absence of the typically lengthy bottoms and overtly covered tops. Rather, what was introduced that year was a swimsuit with thigh high snug shorts underneath a short, tight skirt and a thinly strapped dipping V or oval neckline that often required beach police to physically measure each plunge to make sure the women were not guilty of indecent exposure (Anonymous, 2002). Not even a decade later, the suit gave way to a plunging U that laid bare ones back for all to see. Indeed, swimsuits had taken on an identity of their own, openly making bold statements for their even bolder owners. Colors played an integral part in this monumental metamorphosis, inasmuch as suits prior to the 1920s were cast in virtually nothing other than dark blues or black with a basic contrasting solid red or white color. Primary colors and geometric shapes were all the rage, with accessorized bathing caps overtaking the traditional floppy hat.
