can and often is the most effective teaching plan that there is. It meets the basic requirements as well as introduces lots of ideas and theories that would not be
there without progressive education. progressive education involves the Howard Gardner philosophy that grade cards and tests are not needed. If a child is being
taught by integrating real life and an understanding into the education he receives then the knowledge will take place. To have a successful progressive education
there must also be some essentialism incorporated to the plan. When these two theories are combined the student will receive an education that is steeped in the basics as well
as progressive in its path(Marshall 1997). A classroom teacher can implement these theories into every subject she teaches by using some innovativeness and remembering the basics as
well(Marshall 1997). For the subject of math the progressive method calls for the students to understand the concepts as well as be abel to memorize
the facts. This understanding does not have to be an advanced level, and can be a simple grasp of how mathematics works when applied to everyday life. This can
be done by using age appropriate examples such as the lunch room or grocery shopping field trips. The students can attend a field trip in which they make purchases that
will be donated to a canned food drive. This field trip should take place after the concept of adding and subtracting has been taught. The students will have
