Essay / Research Paper Abstract
An 18 page paper discussing health promotion and its effects in Uganda and the UK relative to the progress of HIV/AIDS infection. The paper reviews the Pender health promotion model and characteristics of adult learning, as well as reviewing the experiences that have made Uganda the only sub-Saharan African nation to date to have been able to reduce the prevalence of AIDS in its adult population. Passion appears to define the difference in approaches to health promotion in Uganda and the UK. The UK has all of the financial resources that Uganda does not and has implemented all action areas specified in WHO's Bangkok Charter, yet it has an increasing problem that is most pronounced within the single segment of the society. It seems clear that Uganda's great success in beating back the advance of HIV/AIDS can be traced back to the openness and willingness to talk about the matter as individuals and various government officials claim. This is a quality lacking in "developed" nations, where prevention hinges primarily on screening processes and unemotional reviews of facts. Bibliography lists 19 sources.

there are many problems facing sub-Saharan Africa other than the HIV/AIDS pandemic, but those other problems often fail to gain a great deal of international attention given the current situation
in which much of Africa is losing an entire generation. HIV/AIDS affects nations around the world, regardless of economic standing or education levels of those nations citizens.
Uganda stands as a model for all nations, regardless of the financial resources available to them. Uganda is the first sub-Saharan nation to achieve
success in beating back the advance of AIDS, and it has done it without the benefit of budgets reaching multi-millions levels. Both Uganda and the UK incorporate the required
actions specified in the Bangkok Charter, but Uganda adds an extra component that makes all the difference. Health Promotion There are a variety
of health promotion models. Though a single theory may not provide a complete perspective, the study of several theories can build a broader one (Fawcett, 2000). Many of
the same questions that can apply to assessing the validity of qualitative research can be used to determine a models relevance to health care promotion. Some of those criteria
are: * Logic of reasoning * Generalizability * Practicality * Anticipated positive outcome One useful model is that created by Nola Pender.
