Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 5 page opinion paper answering the question, “Does progress make civilizations more civilized?” The paper discusses the civilization of the ancient Greeks and Aristotle’s belief that the highest form of existence is in leading the contemplative life. It compares the Greeks some of their neighbors, and discusses the advanced civilization of the native tribes of North America. The September 11 terrorist attacks, drive-by shootings and the discovery of hundreds of unburied bodies at a crematorium are far less civilized than pre-colonization Cherokee death rituals. Progress brought the ability to live with less personal responsibility for one’s own actions. The paper concludes that we absolutely are no more civilized as a result of the technological progress we have made. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

more civilized?" Closer inspection of the paths we have chosen in the ensuing centuries indicates that such is not the case.
The Greeks The ancient Greeks were greatly different from all the groups that surrounded them in that they did take the time to
think. They developed logic systems that we still use today, and many of Euclids mathematical theories still stand unchallenged. We currently are celebrating the latest installment of the
Olympic Games that the Greeks initiated. On the other hand, most of the Greek citizens were obliged to labor for the purpose of
meeting the needs of daily existence. Food had to be produced, preserved, prepared and served; individuals were responsible for clothing themselves or relying on the family unit to provide
such necessities. The civilization operated under a complex system of civil law. Militarily, the Greeks rarely attacked their neighbors but never shrank from the task of defending themselves.
