work with others. There are just too many variables. Aguilar1 reported that about 1,600 prisoners are released from prisons across the nation each day. Of these, about two-thirds,
or, nearly 67 percent, are arrested again within three years.2 A former convict faces numerous challenges when he or she wants to return to society and lead a straight life.
They often have little or no support system, they have few job opportunities, and they have no money. These conditions places them at high risk of engaging in criminal activities
again. Some communities have initiated programs to help prisoners transition to a productive life. The Boston Reentry Initiative (BRI) is one such program.3 This multi-agency initiative is jointly sponsored by
the Suffolk County Sheriffs Department and the Boston Police Department that targets prisoners between the ages of 17 and 34.4 Inmates are involved in the initiative beginning several months
before their release.5 Those who are recommended attend panel sessions with representatives from different criminal justice agencies and from law enforcement. Panel members are able to give the prisoner information
about social services and faith-based services they can access when released.6 Each member of the panel discusses the kinds of services and resources the inmate may access when released.
Law enforcement makes it very clear what will happen if the person is arrested again.7 After the panel sessions, a case worker is assigned to each inmate. Each is also
assigned a faith-based mentor who will meet with them during the remainder of their sentence and also when they are released.8 The inmate participates in developing a plan for when
they are released. When they are released, the panel makes certain someone is there to welcome them, whether that is a family member of the mentor.9 The program
