the elite, and the powerful. Furthermore-until very recent history-in order to have access to higher education, one not only had to be a member of the upper class, it
was also necessary to be male. In other words, the patterns for education that were established in ancient history in Greece persisted, in large part, until the modern era.
However, today, education is widely accessible to all walks of life, cutting across social, gender, and socio-economic lines. Western society tends to regard the history of ancient Athens with
a warm regard because of that citys example of democratic governance. However, a factor that is seldom emphasized is that Athens famous democracy was an institution that denied political power
to women, slaves, and non-Athenians (Flaceliers 55). In Athens, the wives of Athenian citizens had no more political or legal rights then did their slaves. Therefore, it is not surprising
that young Athenian women were not offered the same educational opportunities as their male counterparts (Flaceliere 56). Young women were educated regarded domestic skills, plus enough reading, and arithmetic to
run their households, but that was all (Flaceliere 56). Ancient sources tell us, moreover, that girls were trained from childhood to "see and hear as little as possible and ask
an absolute minimum of questions" (Flaceliere 56). However, if an individual was a member of the Athenian upper class and male, educational opportunities were available. After receiving a basic
