and prejudice. There are those, however, who strongly argue that profiling is only one small part of the war on terrorism and that while a complete nation is not responsible
for terrorism, there are studies that indicate more terrorists will originate in one country more than another. The following paper examines both sides of profiling in the war on terrorism.
Profiling While more and more facilities and institutions are requiring that people show identification in order to enter into buildings, the truth
is that "verifying that someone has a photo ID is a completely useless security measure" (Schneier, 2004). The terrorists from the attacks in September of 2001 all had photograph identification,
some real and some fake, and that did not stop them from doing harm (Schneier, 2004). There is no way to know if someone has evil intentions based on
their identification, but it is also believed that if enough information is known about a person, partially through profiling, then some harm can be avoided (Schneier, 2004). The governments profiling
system for airline passengers, called CAPPS-2, is essentially based on this theory. "People are divided into two categories based on various criteria: the travelers address, credit history and police and
tax records; flight origin and destination; whether the ticket was purchased by cash, check or credit card; whether the ticket is one way or round trip; whether the traveler is
alone or with a larger party; how frequently the traveler flies; and how long before departure the ticket was purchased" (Schneier, 2004). Clearly there are those who would argue
