readership the "best of modern living" (Haimer 06D). This strategy has been enormously successful. In 1996, BH&G was named one of Adweeks "10 Hottest Magazines." Advertising is up
by 9.4%, and?even more importantly?ad revenue is up by 22.2% (Haimer 06D). Circulation has remained relatively constant at around 7.6 million, which makes BH&G the fifth largest paid magazine circulation
in the US (Anonymous bhg.htm). Part of the magazines current success can be attributed to its editor, Jean LemMon, who accepted the job in 1993, becoming the publications first female
editor (Haimer 06D). LemMons editorial focus has edged the magazines overall look away from middle class dowdy towards a more sophisticated look
that is aimed at appealing to upper middle class professionals, with lots of discretionary income. The enormous success of the parent publication has caused BH&G to branch out and treat
the BH&G name as if it were ?mega-brand" (Flinn 5). One of the most profitable ways in which BH&G has branched out is into the arena of special interest publication.
BH&Gs Special Interest Publications (SI) comprise of the companys largest profit centers and the premier providers of useful, how-to information on such topics as food; garden and outdoor living;
decorating and design; and building and remodeling (Anonymous bhg.htm). BH&Gs Special Interest division publishes more than 40 special-interest titles on an annual and semi-annual basis, and some titles are published
