One problem seems to be that many nurses do not understand what a "profession" is; Morris L. Cogan points out that a profession is rooted in understanding of theoretical underpinnings of specific knowledge as well as its accompanying abilities, which are applied to mans welfare (Moloney as cited in Tranbarger, 2000). Society also tends to associate professionals with prestige (2000). Although nurses and others have a hard time considering themselves professionals, it is something that is important to the many individuals who do their jobs well. Sales people, who are often mocked and taunted, are professionals in their chosen industries. What professionalism means exactly is dependent upon the use of the term. In any event, Szeinbach & Barnes (1995) relay which qualities are associated with professionalism . Interestingly, in a study that honed in on pharmacists, it was discovered that pharmacists whose primary practice sites were chain stores had more negative images than pharmacists whose primary practice sites were independently owned (1995). This is a key example of the problem when trying to convey a professional image when one has a serious detriment. The problem is that people associate chain stores with low quality and that is something that is hard to shake. Many professionals like doctors and lawyers try to practice in an environment where their professional images are maintained (Szeinbach & Barnes, 1995) . However, there is a duality between professionalism and mercantilism and it exists in any sector where managers or executives are responsible for quality health care that is disbursed within a predetermined budget (1995).
