between professional and personal ethics. In an ideal world, the ethical code of an organization or professional body will align with the ethical principles of individual workers; however, in practice
this is often not the case. If the individual is strongly committed to ethical absolutes, in relation to their own moral code, then conflicts will remain unresolved and the individual
has little option but to reject actions which he regards as unethical. A health care worker whose religious convictions forbid them to participate in certain surgical procedures, for instance, is
more likely to refuse such participation than to compromise their religious faith and may feel obliged to remove themselves from the workforce altogether rather than be forced into such compromise.
In other cases, ethical dilemmas can only be resolved by taking into account all the potential ramifications of a particular action: if a worker
chooses to resign rather than carry out a procedure they consider unethical, they also have to consider what impact resignation will have on themselves, their family, and other stakeholders. Such
an impact may, in the long term, be more unethical than the original action. Blackburn (2002) also makes the point that individuals do
not always critically evaluate their own ethical codes, but conform to social conditioning which dictates the parameters of good behavior; in other words, they assume that a particular course of
action is the most moral alternative, when this is not in fact the case. In addition, ethical dilemmas are often complicated, and can only be decided through adopting a
situational perspective; Guffey (2003) comments that one has to be aware of ethical traps which make an apparently simple issue difficult to resolve. Nor can one always rely on professional
