as to their ethics and standards?these organizations are the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, the Christian Association for Psychological Studies, and the American Counseling Association. The American Association of
Pastoral Counselors (AAPC) defines pastoral counseling as a "unique form of psychotherapy which uses spiritual resources as well as psychological understanding for healing and growth" (AAPC, 1999). The member of
this organization are certified mental health professionals who have received in-depth religious and/or theological training (AAPC, 1999). The AAPC represents and sets the professional standards for over 3,000 pastoral
counselors and also for roughly 100 pastoral counseling centers that are located throughout the US (AAPC, 1999). Founded in 1963, this organization serves to certify pastoral counselors and accredit pastoral
counseling centers, as well as overseeing training programs. A non-sectarian organization, it professes a respect for the spiritual commitment and religious traditions of all those seeking counseling without the
counselor imposing his or her beliefs onto the client (AAPC, 1999). Membership in the AAPC includes a process of consultation and review of academic and clinical education to insure
that pastoral counselors meet certain competency standards. The AAPC also offers members vital continuing educational opportunities and encourages networks of members that can provide professional support and enrichment (AAPC,
1999). This networking "facilitates growth and innovation in the ministry of pastoral counseling; and provides both specialized in-service and training and supervision in pastoral counseling" (AACP, 1999, p. aapc.org).
