unprofessional as is telling a client secret for example. Each industry has its own professional standards and codes of conduct. In the world of the CPA for example, Landes (2004)
says that professional ethics and professional behavior are driven by rules that they have to follow as opposed to an "essence" or "spirit" that alters their behavior. Those in
occupations without set rules may be at a loss as to what constitute professionalism. In todays competitive world, professionals and those in a variety of industries from retail to
education, worry about the appearance they make. They want to be professional and to appear professional. Morris L. Cogan points out that a profession is rooted in understanding of
theoretical underpinnings of specific knowledge as well as its accompanying abilities, which are applied to mans welfare (Moloney as cited in Tranbarger, 2000). Society also tends to associate professionals with
prestige (2000). It is likely for that reason that people expect those in positions of powers--doctors, lawyers and college professors--to act in a manner that is of the highest integrity.
These professions must gain the trust of the people. Doctors cannot go home and make fun of a patient or relay their personal information to the family nor should professors
infringe on the sacred relationship by beginning to date a student. Professionals are expected to have a higher degree of morality and this goes to a great many professions. Professional
behavior then includes things expected of the general public such as honesty and generosity and all the virtues imaginable, coupled with the dictates of the specific profession. For example, in
