The main thrust of the text regards a new method of critical thinking and analysis that the authors refer to as "productive thinking." Using this method, students are guided in analyzing specific problems and to applying the solutions that is revealed through this method to everyday situations and circumstances. The authors begin their text by exploring something of the history of business management and the theories regarding human relations that have been prevalent in the past. After examining the historical Hawthorne Studies, the authors briefly look at two extremes in management theory, Theories X and Y. Theory X refers to the conventional business assumptions that were prevalent in the 1950s, while Theory Y encompasses the alternative set of assumptions that were developed in order to tap into the unrealized human potential in most organizations. The workplace as it is today is then explored, along with implications for the future and the protocol that is necessary for success. The next topic tackled by the authors is the processes involved in communication, in which the model of communication to be used in this text is explained. This model includes the goals of communications, the modes of communication, verbal and non-verbal communication, and a brief look at communication spaces and communicating through multiple channels.
