the organizations goals (Jex, 2002). It is a positive contribution. Counterproductive behavior is defined as employee behavior that runs counter to the organizations goals (Jex, 2002). It is behavior that
would impede the organizations ability to meet one or more of its goals. There is no assumption of motive in counterproductive behavior. A simple example of productive versus counterproductive
behaviors would be the service received at a restaurant. Good service is productive, bad service is counterproductive. The type of service has a direct impact on the server because they
will receive a higher tip for good service. It also affects the organization because when diners receive good service, they are more likely to return. Job performance is a
set of behaviors that can be productive or counterproductive. Another type of productive behavior would be an employee completing tasks or projects that are beyond their job description, such as
helping a co-worker. A third type of productive behavior is innovative or being innovative and creative (Jex, 2002). Productive behaviors are often referred to as organizational citizenship behavior. Anyones behavior
is due to a complex interaction of different factors that involve characteristics of the person and the environment. An employee performs their job well intentionally but counterproductive behaviors are not
