We want to use the structural-functional model to make this analysis, which means we have to understand what that is so we can apply it. According to one definition (too
complex to reproduce in its entirety here), the SF paradigm includes the following characteristics: "... the first building blocks recognizable as social in nature are groups" (Family crisis integration of
the five theory groups). The groups may play reciprocal roles, linking them together to form a structure; in addition, the system interacts with the environment (Family crisis integration of the
five theory groups). Finally, such a system "is said to be functional if it is able to resolve problems using environmental inputs and offer the benefit of its adaptation to
other systems" (Family crisis integration of the five theory groups). For our purposes, then, the structural-functional model will show us groups that work together to resolve problems using environmental inputs,
and which can be adapted to other systems. Lets see if we can get all that to work for software. According to one source, the "base of the supply chain
is technology standards and platforms" (Value chains, 2006). The acceptance of the standard is "key to the survival of new products. The bandwagon effect, which occurs when a new standard
catches on, can make or break a technology company in a short amount of time" (Value chains, 2006). Companies that are going to keep up in this area have to
hire creative people and invest in R&D (Value chains, 2006). This will have an impact on the local economy by creating more jobs and pumping more money into the environment.
For example, "Red Hat, a major company set up in Raleigh, provides an open source operating system based on Linux, which seems to be a growing technology platform that has
