Concept When a director begins to conceptualize a production, the first question should be why he (or she) is doing the show in the first place, especially when its a classic like Romeo and Juliet. What new vision is he bringing to the project that justifies doing it again? That vision will dictate the entire concept of the production. Some of the questions that arise when doing Shakespeare include whether or not to "modernize" the language; and whether to set the play in the original time period or update it. In this case, Shakespeare himself gives the director instructions; the play takes place "In fair Verona, where we lay our scene" (Act I, Sc I, line 2). But even though we are told where the play takes place, its not necessary to set it in the late 1500s; the Royal Shakespeare Company did a bloody, almost bare-stage production in 2000 that clearly showed that "Romeo and Juliets untimely death was the price to be paid for allowing senseless bloodlust to spiral out of control" (Plays in focus). The RSC is arguably the best Shakespeare company in the world so perhaps the director might want to consider a minimalist production. The focus of the play as always is on Romeo and Juliet. They are the title characters for a reason and their tragic romance is the heart of the work. There are other compelling characters (Mercutio nearly steals the whole thing), but no matter how enticing they are, the focus must remain on the two young lovers.
