Summer by Barbara Kingsolver As noted, nature is very important in this novel as it is the setting and almost serves as a character in and of itself. The characters
work with the environment in one way or another, interacting and seeking hope and a sense of happiness in the nature that surrounds them. The primary characters to be discussed
in this paper are Nannie and Garnett. They both have very strong feelings and opinions about nature and how to interact with it and for the most part this revolves
around the American Chestnut Tree. Garnett grows Chestnut trees and is working towards growing a strong set of trees that will not die as he is affected by a blight.
However, is he a man who believes that God controls everything and does not believe in evolution, although he is deeply immersed in his own role in genetic modification. Nannie,
on the other hand, believes strongly in not using pesticides or otherwise strongly interfering with nature, although she also does not possess the strong religious believes that Garnett possesses.
The American Chestnut tree thus symbolizes the nation, nature, these individuals, and their position or existence as it relates to the human race and a modern world. The Chestnut tree
