It develops as departments grow and have need to perform additional duties and meet additional responsibilities without additional time or material inputs, and it is evident that the target
department fell victim to the same. Technological advances also can create opportunity for waste. As some processes give way to technological change, others lag behind. The mix
that develops and remains has the ability to create additional effort, input or simple inconvenience. These factors were operational as well. Based
primarily on rearranging the layout of the work area, the results of the single-area trial are that workers productivity has increased by a significant amount and is still increasing.
They are more aware of the need for efficiency, and they have an appreciation of the dollar cost of inefficiency over the course of a year. Employees in the
target area have become quite engaged and continue to seek out additional improvements in an attitude of continuous improvement. It is recommended that
the same processes be applied to all departments across the company. Gains made in the target area represent the "low hanging fruit" in that it was believed to be
the area of greatest need and therefore was able to demonstrate great gains. Other departments are likely to return less dramatic gains, but company-wide, similar improvements in all departments
